With numerous successful homestands hosted by the Shanghai Dragons and Hangzhou Spark in China over the last several months, some sort of normalcy has returned in terms of live OWL events. At the Esports Stadium Arlington, the Dallas Fuel hosted the first North American live event since the COVID-19 epidemic began in March 2020.
The Galen Center, located near Los Angeles, is an indoor arena run by the University of South California. It's a 255,000-square-foot venue with a capacity of 10,258 spectators, though owing to prospective COVID-19 limits, that number may be lowered during the Overwatch League Grand Finals. The Overwatch League has also unveiled the postseason format and the many methods squads can make it into the playoffs.
The top three teams in the West Region and the top two teams in the East Region will automatically qualify for the playoff bracket based on "league points" won through wins or tournament placing. Due to their many tournament appearances, the Dallas Fuel and Shanghai Dragons have already qualified. Two spots in the west and one in the east remain.
The remaining teams will advance to a play-in round. The West Region's fourth through ninth seeds will compete for two remaining berths, while the East Region's third through fifth seeds will battle for one additional position.
The postseason bracket will feature eight teams: five from the West Region and three from the East Region. The bracket will be a double-elimination format, with two teams advancing to the Grand Finals in 2021.
The Grand Finals winner will receive the championship trophy
as well as $1.5 million in prize money in 2021, while the runner-up will
receive an incredible $750,000. For the time being, the OWL must finish one
more tournament cycle to establish placement based on league points. On July 30th,
the Countdown Cup cycle will begin.
